Following the success of its office concept in Ghent, Upoffix also aims to expand in Brussels with a sustainable office complex. For this large-scale renovation and new construction project on Wetstraat, Smet Group is providing the geothermal heating and cooling system. This way, a single central system regulates the heating and cooling of the Wet and Jozef buildings.

  • Client: Upgrade Estate
  • Period: 2026–2027
  • Location: Wetstraat, Brussels
  • Solution: Geothermal Energy
  • Technology: Ground-Source Heat Pump (GSHP) – power plant – geothermal energy – geothermal heat

Behind the Scenes

  • First, Smet Group conducted a hydrogeological study based on an exploratory drilling. That study assists the client and the engineering firm with two key elements: developing an ecological energy concept and navigating the permitting process.
  • We are currently working on the ground-source heat storage system for the project. This type of system is unique because it combines the functions of a heat pump and a ground-source heat storage system. The latter is quite complex due to the limited space in the building’s basement, so we are implementing it ourselves.

A Sustainable Approach to the Project

  • SDG 7 – The geothermal system allows the building to be heated entirely to the desired temperature using geothermal energy. This choice makes energy consumption more sustainable and more affordable.
  • SDG 8 – We contribute to connecting and centralizing businesses in the heart of Europe, our capital, Brussels.
  • SDG 11 – Using energy more efficiently and making the most of existing building structures makes this approach more city-friendly. In addition, we minimize stops for freight transport by producing as much as possible in-house and shipping directly from there to the construction site.
  • SDG 13 – Our innovative solutions facilitate the transition from fossil fuels to green cooling and heating technologies. This enables the office complex to reduce its CO2 emissions.
