Born Lock Complex, Juliana Canal
The Juliana Canal is a major artery of the international Meuse Route. To make this waterway suitable for larger ships, the final section near the Born Lock had to be widened and deepened. This was a unique undertaking: the canal section was completely drained to allow for thorough work on the riverbed and banks. We applied our expertise in foundation engineering to bring this complex project to fruition.

A Sustainable Approach to the Project
Rijkswaterstaat is widening and deepening the Juliana Canal to make the Meuse Route ready for the future of shipping. This will allow ships up to 190 meters long and 3 meters deep to navigate smoothly.
- SDG 9 – This widening of the lock enables a modal shift to water transport, thereby reducing the CO2 impact of freight traffic.
